Le
Case del Butafone
The "Case
del Butafone" complex is located at a distance of around
4km from the village of Chiusi, and includes a villa inhabited
by the owners of the complex and an ancient tower for the
use of guests.
The tower is a square-plan construction
dating from the 16th century, originally used as a watchtower
from which to guard the Val di Chiana and the River Tresa,
one-time frontier of the Papal States.
The estate is situated on the
hills that form the border between the Umbria and Tuscany
regions, in the administrative district of Città della
Pieve, and affords wide-open views of the Trasimeno and
Chiusi lakes below.
From
here, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, you can
feast your eyes on a stunning 360° panorama, although
your gaze is likely to be drawn to the east, where it will
linger on the breathtaking landscapes captured in the 15th
century by the brush of Pietro Vannucci, known as 'il Perugino'
('the Perugian'). To the west, you will marvel at the little
jewels of Medieval and Renaissance architecture that are
the towns of Chiusi, Cetona, Montepulciano and Pienza.
